A veteran of the American Revolutionary War, Jeremiah Mulford was his 60's when he served in the Dutchess County, New York Militia. A native of Long Island, the senior soldier lived to see the triumph of the cause he fought for, and died "in his 78th year", eight years after the war's end, in his adopted state, New Jersey. The brown sandstone stele which marks his grave features a pear-faced soul effigy reminiscent of the style of cutter Uzal Ward of Newark, but its tympanum is embellished with undulating lines, a detail more typical of the Common Jersey Carver.
