Jesse was born in Indiana, the fifth child of Mary Dorsey Luke. He was the son of Simpson Cronin, with whom Mary, a widow, was in a long-term, unmarried relationship with - a social taboo at this period in history.

Jess came to Oregon in the early 1900's with his mother and older brothers and worked as a farmer and in various timber industry jobs for the next 30 years. His listed occupation at the time of his passing was a carpenter.

Jesse was married in 1903 to Lunetta (Nettie) Miller and had one daughter to this union. He married Lerona Helms, daughter of W.W. and Anna Helms about 1913. They had one son before Lerona died giving birth to their second; the infant passed shortly after. He was re-married at some point but the name of his third wife is unknown.

Jesse was preceded in death by his mother, and his wife, Lerona. He was survived (presumably) by his daughter, Jessie, son Norman, and a granddaughter. He was also survived by brothers, Ed, LeRoy, John Nelson, his sister Minnie Ola, and numerous nieces and nephews.
