Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 25 in the Chapel of Colonial Funeral Home for Mrs. Ellene A. Roney, 91, of Columbia, who died Friday, March 23 at her residence. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery. The Rev. Kenny Peavy officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at the funeral home.
A native of Marion County, she was a retired lunch room worker at Hub School and a member of Edna Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Herbert Roney; son, Ottis Ray "Buddy" Roney; parents, Hosea and Mattie Alexander; two sisters, Allene King and Pauline Breakfield; three brothers, Leslie, Charles Ray and Cecil Alexander and two grandchildren, Gloria and Daniel Roney.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Sumrall of Foxworth and Charlotte Robertson (Jimmy) of Columbia; three sons, Gordon R. Roney (Berniece) of Prattville, Ala., Michael Roney (Cecelia) of Millport, Ala. and Dwain Roney (Lori) of Sumrall; a sister, Ruth Welch of Houston, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren and many other friends and family.
Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
