Retiree Spent 40 Years in Radio Here
Long Career Began at Old KMBC Radio--Also on Staff at WHB
Richard C. (Dick) Smith, 70, formerly of Independence and a veteran in the radio field here, died Friday of a heart attack in Cass Lake, Minn.
Mr. Smith was born in Lamoni, Ia., the son of Joseph Smith III, who was president of the Reorganized Latter Day Saint church. The family moved to Independence in 1906.
Mr. Smith received an associate of arts degree from Graceland College, Lamoni, and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Iowa. He taught in high schools in Butte and Helena, Mont., five years.
Mr. Smith became associated with the old KMBC radio station about 40 years ago. He worked for WHB radio station in 1931 and 1932, later returning to KMBC. He was program director for KMBC when he retired about five years ago.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Florence Smith of the home; two sons, Alan Smith, Decatur. Ga., and Gene Smith, 9100 Charlotte; two brothers, W. Wallace Smith, 428 Bellevista drive, Independence, who is now president of the R.L.D.S. church, and Reginald A. Smith, 137 West Twenty-ninth terrace, Independence, who is an Independence municipal judge, and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday at the Speaks chapel. Independence; burial in Mound Grove cemetery.
