Bernice Loretta Black was born on October 20, 1920 to Calvin and Ora (Diebert) Hines in Eckley, Colorado. She passed away on October 9, 2011 at the age of 90 at the Yuma Life Care Center in Yuma, Colorado after losing her battle to cancer. Bernice attended the Waverly and Yuma Schools and graduated from Yuma in 1937. She married Marion Black on Christmas Eve of 1939 and to this union three children were born, Jerry, Sharry and Denny.

Bernice worked for Yuma Laundry, Yuma Livestock, the Wooden Spoon and the Yuma Community Center. Bernice was very well known for her delicious pies! She made pies for over 40 years for individuals, fairs, churches, cafes and so on. She was especially famous for her peanut cream pie. She was a very faithful church member of the First Southern Baptist Church, she came from a family where she had five brothers who were ministers and strongly encouraged her to make good choices. She was an avid sports fan and tried to not miss a sports event or any other activities of her kids and grandkids.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Ora Hines; husband, Marion Black; four brothers, Ralph Hines, Forrest Hines, Walter Hines, and Howard Hines; son-in-law, Gary Schafer; two sister-in-laws, Thelma Hines and Margaret Hines.

Bernice is survived by her son, Jerry and wife, Mary of Dexter, Michigan; daughter Sharry Schafer of Gering, Nebraska; and son, Denny and wife, Pam of Yuma, Colorado; ten grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; brother, Don Hines of Topeka, Kansas; sister-in-laws, Erma Hines, Lucille Hines and Christine Hines.

There was a visitation on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at Baucke Funeral Home in Yuma. The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church in Yuma, Colorado with Pastor Wyatt Duncan officiating. Interment following at the Yuma Cemetery. Baucke Funeral Home directed the service.
