William enlisted on May 8, 1813 in Capt. Charles Campbell's Company of the Dearborn County Militia (Indiana), and was discharged on June 17, 1813. He married Jane Fenton, daughter of John Fenton and Mary Ann Fairs, on July 21, 1815 in Switzerland County, Indiana. He was co-executor with his mother of his father's estate (appointed January 26, 1822 in Bartholomew Co., Indiana). He married his second wife Mary Ann Gilliland on May 7, 1840 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. His house was the first polling place in the newly formed Clay Township (organized 1841). In November 1847 he left Indiana with his second wife and younger children, and settled in Mahaska County, Iowa, before finally removing to West Eagleville, Harrison County, Missouri where he was enumerated in the 1860 census.

William was 5'11" in height, had a fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes.
