Joseph, a farmer, was the son of:
Franklin H. Gunn 1825 – 1900
Martha Ann Barnes 1832 – 1912

His siblings were: Louisa "Lou," M.C., Mary G., Emma Jocola, Daniel Green, Ava Lenora, & Sarah Zeluda "Lude" Elizabeth.

During the Civil War Joseph's father enlisted on side of Confederacy in Alabama. He was a member of the 1st AL, TN & MS Regiment & served from Sept 1861 until Joseph E. Johnson surrendered in 1865.

His father died in Hillsboro, Hill Co, TX on Feb. 14, 1900. His obituary, which was published in the Hillsboro newspaper, helps provide a little more information about his family.

"F. H. Gunn died at his home here last Wednesday evening. His remains were interred at the Peoria cemetery. Mr. Gunn came to Hill county over twenty years ago and settled in the Arnett community, where he resided until quite recently.

His wife and several children survive him. The children are all married and live in different sections of the state. He was a member of the Baptist church and few men stood better in the community than he did. He was universally spoken of as 'a good straight man and a good neighbor.'"

Joseph married Sara Ann Nancy Stephenson in Upshur Co, TX on Aug. 17, 1873. Their children were Vannie V., Charley M., William Messer, Ambrose C., Cordelia "Dellie," Zora E., & a baby infant son that died in 1887, the same year he was born.

In 1909 Joseph was diagnosed with Bright's Disease. His condition worsened, and he died at 4 p.m. on Sept. 16, 1914, at their home, which was located in Montague Co, TX near Newport. He was 65 years old.
