Alva "Dale" Hammer, 78 of Galesburg, Illinois passed away October 8, 2011 in Galesburg, Illinois.

Dale was born the son of Dewey W. Hammer and Mary Irene Betts on February 2, 1933 in Peoria, Illinois. He married Alice "Allie" M. Begner on May 12, 1952 in Princeville, Illinois. She survives him of Galesburg, Illinois.

Also surviving are sons Mike Hammer of Galesburg, Illinois and Jeff (Susan) Hammer of Monmouth, Illinois. Sister in law Phyllis Kniss of Galesburg, Illinois. Nephews Scott Kniss of Galesburg, Don (Rhonda) Tucker of Knoxville, Gary (Patty) Tucker of Galesburg, Susan (Russell) Rose of Galesburg and Tim (Wendy) Begner of Princeville, Illinois. He is also survived by 1 step grandson and 2 great grandchildren.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents.

Dale served his country during the Korean War from 1953 – 1955. Later he worked for the railroad then he became an Industrial Carpenter for 38 years. He also owned and operated Hammer Paint Service in Abingdon for 19 years. He enjoyed making many different things with wood; he also spent many hours' ballroom dancing and fishing. He was a member of the Lake Bracken Country Club and the Galesburg Moose Lodge. Dale was a good Husband and Father and was always there for anyone that needed him.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM
