Merle was a "city boy" and his 2 cousins, Albert and Robert Howery were "farm boys". Merle loved to go out to the farm and "work", thinking it was "fun". Albert and Robert, however, knew that it was classified as "work".

Surviving are 2 sons Donald M. (Joanne) of Lansing and Arthur C. of Florida: 3 grandchildren, Christine (Richard) Phillips of Oak harbor, WA; Michael (Joann) Hayhoe of Burlington Iowa; and David Hayhoe of Grand Ledge, 6 great grandchildren, Keri Smith, Viki and Paul Phillips, Morgan, Joeseph and Emily Hayhoe; sister, Lorrene VanAtta of Florida; nephew, Ronald Hayhoe of Lansing.

He was predeceased by an infant brother, Emory, in 1902, and his parents.
