OBITUARY

Edward Nicholas Madsen, oldest child of Andrew and Mary Madsen was born on July 11, 1885 in a sod house in Norton County, Kansas and passed away on April 11, 1968 at St. Francis, Kansas at the age of 82 years and 9 months. Most of his early life was spent on his father's ranch in Rawlins County. In early manhood he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to work in the Fitzgerald Dept. Store. Later he returned to Atwood to work in his father's department store.

On January 22, 1908 he was united in marriage with Matilda Christina Hokenson of Herndon, Kansas. To this union four children were born--Orville C. of Arvada, Colo., Kenneth L. of Denver, Colo., Viola Madsen Vap of Boulder, Colo., and Harold R. of the home.

In 1912 he became a rural mail carrier in McDonald, Kans. and served his patrons in many ways other than just carrying the mail. After 43 years of service he retired in 1955. To show their appreciation the patrons of his route held a reception and presented Ed and his wife with easy chairs and a set of matched luggage.

He was a member of the Federated Church, and served as its treasurer for a number of years. For as long as the Rawlins County Fair existed he was its faithful secretary. He was a Charter member of the McDonald Lions Club and served in all of its local offices. He was the zone Chairman of District 17, also serving as Cabinet Secretary and Treasurer. From this organization he received Senior Master member of Masonic Lodge 383 in McDonald.

After his retirement he became an authoratative collecter of coins. This hobby gave him many enjoyable hours. On January 22. 1968 he and his devoted wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They received about 150 cards from their many friends and relatives, reminding them of the many happy years together.

Besides his wife and children he leaves ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; three brothers--Irving of Lincoln, Nebr., Andrew of Denver, Colo., and Howard of Pico Rivera, Calif.; two sisters--Mrs. Beulah Rupe of St. Maries, Ida. and Margaret Madsen of McDonald, Kans. Other relaties and friends join in cherishing his memory.

Services were held April 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the Federated Church of McDonald with Rev. Swihart officiating. Burial was in Grace cemetery. Graveside services were in charge of Masonic Lodge 383.
