Al was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and, as is usually the case with this type of cancer, he lived less than a year after diagnosis. When word of his illness became public, faculty and students at Goodrich High School were devastated, especially the Girls Basketball Team he coached. Several local television stations did interviews with him at his home. Al had many close and devoted friends.
