She was born in Stotesbury, W.Va., and was the oldest of five sisters.
She and her now late husband, Robert Earl Sheppard, operated Sheppard Electric Co., in Hampton. Mrs. Sheppard was a former member of Hampton Baptist Church and a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church in Tabb, Va.
Grathel is survived by her son, Jack Sheppard and his wife, Ruby of Newport News; her daughter, Pat Ambrose and her husband, Bob of Yorktown; three grandchildren, Jeff Sheppard of Martinsburg, W.Va., Tracy and Lee McVetta of Matthews, N.C., Bobbie and Bo Hurley of Greenville, S.C.; seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666. A celebration of Grathel's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1004 Yorktown Rd., Yorktown, VA 23693; or the Hampton Baptist Church Building Fund, 40 King's Way, Hampton, VA 23669.
