MEMORIAL SERVICES AT HASTINGS FOR BESSIE PURCELL
Funeral services for Bessie Anna Purcell were held at the Hastings Methodist Church Tuesday, March 24, at 2 p.m., the Rev. Willis Grant, officiate. Interment was in the Hastings Cemetery with Mansfield Funeral Service in charge.
Casket bearers were Floys Hall, Charlie Hall, Steve Haines, W. A. Courtier, C. C. Hamilton, Charlie Carson. Honorary bears were Fred Martin and V. Cromwall.
Carrying for Flowers were Mrs. Steve Haines and Mrs. Jack Niday. Mrs. Warren Darrah, soloist, sang, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Shall We Gather at The River", accompanied by Mrs. Mark Bowen, pianist. Fred Lookabill ushered.
Bessie Anna Purcell, daughter of Mahalia and Albert Dalrymple, was born in Hastings, May 12, 1878 and passed away March 24, 1961, at the age of 82 years, 10 months. Mrs. Purcell had fallen at 7 o'clock the night of March 23, receiving injuries that resulted in her death. The end came at 10:15 the following morning in a hospital in San Bernardino, California.
Mrs. Purcell had lived her entire life in the Hastings area until four years ago when she moved to California to be close to her daughter. She was in the first graduating class from the Hastings High School in 1896. She was a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge at Hastings and an active member of the Hastings Church and WSCS and other community organizations.
On August 31, 1896, she was united in marriage with William Everett Purcell, who also lived in the Hastings area. Mr. Purcell passed away on January 15, 1937. To this union six children were born, three preceding her in death, Joe in 1915, Floyd in 1928, and Mildred in 1948.
Mrs. Purcell leaves to mourn her passing, three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Kelley, San Bernardino, California, Mrs. Evelyn Read, Covina, California, and Mrs. Marjorie Brown of Dallas, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Edythe Purcell of Council Bluffs. She has 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren besides a host of relatives and friends.
Mrs. Purcell was a wonderful mother and friend, thinking of others and living by the Golden Rule. One of her main interests in later life was her little great great grandchildren.
