Giles F. Hoch, age 88, a lifelong resident of Pleasant Township in Marion County, died unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, May 9, 2014, at his home with his loving wife by his side.
Giles was born October 30, 1925 at home on the farmstead in Pleasant Township of Marion County, the oldest of four children of the late Carl F. and June (Bumgartner) Hoch. He graduated from Pleasant High School, Class of 1943.
Immediately following high school, Giles was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. A GI in the invasion fleet headed for Japan, Giles was stationed there after the dropping of the atomic bombs. While there he helped build an airbase in Tokyo. Recently, he was overwhelmed with pride, when he joined his fellow veterans on the Honor Flight tour of Washington D.C. He also was a member of the Prospect American Legion Post 368, VFW 7201 and the 40 & 8 of Marion.
Upon his honorable discharge, Giles returned home to marry the young lady, Ruth Hough, he had met when they were 16 at a joint Sunday School picnic of their two churches, Trinity Lutheran Church and the former St. Paul's Lutheran Church. They were married on November 3, 1946, in the church's parsonage. They have been by each other's side ever since, cherishing their 67 years of marriage and lovingly raising four children together.
Giles grew up on the farm and proudly followed in his father's footsteps as a lifelong farmer. His passion for farming (you couldn't take the boy out of his farm) was still very much alive as he was still planting a garden and checking on the fields the night before he died.
A man of deep faith, Giles was a dedicated lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was baptized as a child. He was very active in the church and through the years held various offices on Church Council, served on numerous committees and sang in the choir. He also was active in the community as a member of the Prospect Lions Club and the Pleasant Senior Citizens where he enjoyed playing euchre.
Dedicated to the Pleasant Township community, Giles served as a Pleasant Township Trustee for over 20 years, and he was a charter member of the Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Department. Giles drove school bus for the Pleasant School system for over 25 years. One of his favorite assignments was driving for many of their sporting events. As a bus driver, his presence alone commanded the respect of the young passengers.
When Giles wasn't farming, one of his favorite pastimes was fishing. He loved being on the water, whether he was catching fish or not. He took many vacations to Maine, Minnesota and Wisconsin just to fish, and recently took two special fishing trips with his sons.
Avid travelers, Giles and Ruth have traveled all over the United States and took several trips overseas with his sister and brother-in-law, Margene and Bill. All along the way, he loved sightseeing.
Anyone who knows Giles, knows you can't talk about him without mentioning his ornery and mischievous ways. You would think something was wrong with him if he wasn't teasing or picking on you in his own fun-loving way.
One of the best words to describe Giles would be devoted. He was devoted to his farm, his church, his community, the children of Pleasant Schools, and he was especially devoted to his family…his beloved wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Ruth Hoch of Prospect; three children: Ronald (Sharry) Hoch of Westerville, Charlene (Bob) Baker of Prospect, and Kevin (Irene) Hoch of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren: Chris (Linda) Hoch, Shelley (Phil) Snavely, Beth (Chris "Smuck") Smucker, Randy Russell, Matt Hoch, Tim (Amy) Hoch, Theresa (Javis) Ray, and Jeff Hoch; six great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Maggie Hoch, Michael Snavely, Neema Smucker, Autumn Hoch, and Winter Ray; two step granddaughters, Melissa Luman and Nichole Baker; and seven step great-grandchildren; a brother, Loren (Marilyn) Hoch of Huron, OH; a sister, Margene (Bill) Vandergriff of Bluffton, SC; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dalton and Dolores Dean of Springfield, OH, and a sister-in-law, Christine Hough of Syracuse, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Giles was preceded in death by his son, Wayne Hoch, on August 10, 2002; a sister in-law, Norine Hoch in April 2012; a brother, Dean E. Hoch in May 2012; and a brother-in-law, Bill Hough in March 2000.
His family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13th, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church (address below), with Rev. Ed Wahl officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in Prospect Cemetery.
