The Champlain's came to Wagoner in 1928 and resided on what is called Champlain Lane, dedicated in their honor. John was a rail foreman living in a one-room section-housing unit provided by MOPAC. This home was later remodeled to expand for their growing family of 10 members. John dug the cellar himself, but never used it, but sat in the house during each tornado storm. His wife and kids would run to the cellar, get soaking wet, be scared out of their wits and John would be inside the house... rocking peacefully in his favorite chair.
The old house was demolished and the cellar was filled in. The area where the old house stood is a modular home. All that remains from the original owners is the chicken coop and the stone well.
