James, 88, of Alma, passed away Friday, at Mid-Michigan Medical Center - Gratiot.

Funeral services for Jim were held Tuesday, October 11th at Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home, Alma.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alma VFW Post 1454.

Jim was the son of James C. and Mildred (Dickerson) Essex. He attended Alma High School and enlisted in the Army in 1942 before graduation. He served for four years during WWII and was in an artillery unit. After his honorable discharge he went back to receive his high school diploma.

He married Roberta "Birdie" Trepanier on October 15, 1946 and together they raised five children. Jim worked for Lobdell-Emery Mfg. Co. in Alma for 35 years retiring in 1985.

Jim was an active member of the Alma VFW Post 1454 and had served two terms as Post Commander. He loved to camp and listen to music and enjoyed his birds, squirrels and going out on his pontoon.

He also enjoyed being in his garage where he could tinker on various projects. He especially cherished the time he spent being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jim believed in family and wanted them around him. He was a hero and mentor to us all. His family will remember him as a great man who lived his life doing for his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Roberta, two daughters, Linda (Larry) Malek of Sumner and Deb (Tim) Tice of Barryton, two sons, Walter (Bev) Essex of Alma and Jim Essex of Alma, daughters-in-law, Sandy Essex of Alma and Karen Essex-Beebe of Alma, sister, Harriet (Kenneth) Beard of Clare, sister-in-law, Norma Essex of Alma and many grand and great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, son, Keith Essex, grandson, Joey Malek, great granddaughter, Jillyan Smith, brother, Ford Essex and two sisters, Venna Holman and Rosalind VanHorn.
