On a trip to MS from TX in Oct., 1869, he was accidently shot when his own gun fell and discharged. He died 8 days later at the home of a nephew, Walker Allen.
He was buried in an unmarked grave in Mansfield, DeSota Parish, LA, in the cemetery of a Presbyterian Church in Mansfield.
