Walt loved his family and regularly attended the Turning Pointe Methodist Church. He was active in assisting with a number of activities within the church and enthusiastically volunteered to work on outdoor projects. He was a lifetime member of the River Bend Association.

He was active in West Side Sportsman's Club. He was a long time member of Inland Yacht Club and held many offices there. While in Inland Yacht Club, he was twice voted Boater of the Year and also was awarded the lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the sport of pleasure boating and boating safety.
