Raynard was the fifth of seven children. On January 1, 1923, he married Esther Streitler, and the couple raised two children: Florine and Robert. In his early years, he was employed by Weber & Son Button Factory in Muscatine, initially as a button cutter, and later as a button weigher. He operated James Grocery on Oregon Street in Muscatine for 25 years.
