Llewellyn David Brandt was know as Lew. He and his brother, William Benjamin Brandt, children of Mary Ella Hamsher and John D. Brandt, became orphans at an early age. They lived in an orphanage in Philadelphia, PA. Lew completed 2nd grade.
At the age of 19, Lew joined the US Navy at League Island PA on Sept. 15th, 1898, when living at Orrstown Franklin Co PA. Lew became a Seamans App. 3rd-2nd-&1st Class sailing on the USS Brooklyn. He served overseas from Oct.1899 to May 1902 in the Spanish American War. Honorably discharged Nov. 1902 at Boston MA USS Wabash. This record shows Lew born in Newville PA,1881.
On his WWI Registration Card, Sept. 1918 lists Lew was short, medium build, brown eyes and light brown hair. Lew's occupation being a steam engine Conductor, Supts. Ops. for the AT&SF Railway and in living Winslow Navajo Co AZ. Amelia C. Brandt, listed as next of kin (wife), living on W. 3rd St. in 1920. The 1930 Census shows their address being her hotel on Kinsley Av., Winslow Navajo Co AZ.
In 1940, Lew being the owner of the house on 416 E. 4th St., where his brother, Bill and wife, Veda, lived with him. (The Hardin's moved next door in 1946!)
Thus started a whole new and special world for me! He was so funny, a big tease, so sweet, yet, he would always be teaching and had a watchful eye. He called me "worry-wart"...not sure if I worried him or he thought I worried a lot about everything! When he would travel, he always wrote me letters (I still have a couple), always brought home a fun, unique gift, even a camera. Not sure what connection, if any, he had Kodak Films in CA. (I took the picture posted on his memorial page when I was 7 yrs. of age.)
Being retired, he would sit on the front porch and swing for hours. He loved to play cards with me and at the Elks Lodge. Always wore the beret type hat, dress pants, dress shirt and tie.
A truly wonderful man!!! I remember that one day in the spring of 1950 he just wasn't around any more. Maybe being a young 8 yrs. of age helped me with that transition.
