John S Ault was an officer in the 1st Missouri Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War and a mayor of Salem. He came to Salem in 1881 as a plasterer/brickmason, was elected marshal of Salem, became a lawyer in 1887 and was elected mayor in 1896. He was a member of GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Post 128 in Salem.
