From Elwood Call Leader, Feb. 5, 1909:
Aged Pioneer Died at Old Homestead Yesterday
At half-past four o'clock last evening, the spirit of John Cole, who lived four and one-half miles southwest of the city, passed into the great beyond. The deceased leaves seven children, all living and a host of friends to mourn him. The funeral will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock, interment in the Cook Cemetery.
Mr. Cole, who died at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 21 days, was one of the oldest residents of this part of Indiana. He came with his parents to Tipton County from New Jersey when he was but 9 years of age. The journey was frought with many dangers and vicissitudes. They cleared the land where the old homestead now stands, whch was then in the midst of the wilderness. There were few neighbors then in this part of the country, and Mr. Cole was fond of telling how they often entertained members of Indian tribes at their home in the early days. Wild game constituted to a great extent their food, and the clothing was often made from the skins of animals. As the wilderness disappeared and families began moving in, Mr. Cole became acquainted with them, and the friendships then formed lasted until his death.
The deceased was a good man, admired and respected by all who knew him, and during his life, he was interested in many moves which were begun and carried through in the improvement of the county and vicinity in which he lived.

Note: Cause of death - La Grippe Occupation: Farmer
He was the son of John B. Cole and Sarah Maines Cole.
