Irene McCrary grew up in Quay County, New Mexico where her father Jesse Lee McCrary and her mother Hattie May McDaniel McCrary moved from Oklahoma and homesteaded on land close to Norton, New Mexico. She married Leslie Rhay Harmon on May 29, 1928 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. They had five children, Mary Helen, Jacquelin June, Donald Eugene, Bessie Arlene and J.C.(died as an infant). Her second marriage was to Charles E. Evans on November 20, 1937 in Clovis, New Mexico. They had four children Frances Lorene, Charles Edward, Cleta Mae, and Dorthy Ann.
