James Calloway Smith was born in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Missouri,
December 18, 1844, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. Orr, at
Dover, Okla., January 29, 1914, aged 69 years, 1 month and 2 days.
October 22, 1863, he was married to Eliza Jane Merford. To this union
was born 10 children, four of whom with the widow remain to mourn the loss
of a loving father. Two of these, Mrs. S. Orr and Wm. Smith, who live
near Dover.
Mr. Smith was on his way from his home at Gainesville, overland to Dover
with a son, when he took suddenly ill, and was compelled to finish the
trip from Vinita, Okla., on a train. He died soon after reaching Dover.
Deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist church.
The funeral was held at the Evangelical church in Dover, Thursday,
January 21, conducted by Rev. S. Beese, and the remains were interred
in the Banner cemetery.
