ROBT. A. LITTLE CALLED BY DEATH
Pioneer Planter, Banker and Merchant Expires at His Home After Illness of Several Months.
Robert Alexander Little, seventy-seven years old, widely known planter, banker and merchant, said to be one of the wealthiest men in Arkansas, died at 8:30 o'clock last night at the family residence, 604 East Seventh Street, after an illness of more than a year. He had been confined to his home for several months, being afflicted with heart trouble. During his illness he kept in close touch with his large and varied business interests. Only about half an hour before his death he was in consultation with his son-in-law, John h. Hamiter, regarding his plantation affairs which for several years Mr. Hamiter had looked after. It was during this conversation he suddenly lapsed into unconsciousness and expired.
Born in North Carolina.
Mr. Little was born at Waldesboro, N.C., August 28, 1838. He was the son of George and Susan Bennett Little. He came to Arkansas in 1853 and settled in Ashley Township, Pulaski County, where he taught school for a short time, having received his education in a private school at Waldesboro and at Davidson Presbyterian College. Mr. Little afterward purchased a farm in Ashley Township which is now known as the Ehler place. He planted cotton there, but spent the summers in Little Rock until 1878, when he located here permanently. After moving to this city he continued his purchases of farm lands and invested in real estate.
Mr. Little owned considerable property in Pulaski and Lonoke Counties. He was also interested in stock in local banks and cotton mills in North Carolina. He had been director of the German National Bank since its organization and was vice president at the time of his death. Previous to the change of management of the bank two years ago, he was president.
Civil War Veteran.
During the Civil War he served in the commissary department of the Confederacy in Little Rock. In the early eighties he was owner of the Grand Opera House on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets. He managed the theatre for several years. During 1899 he was vice president of the Gazette Publishing Company. Mr. Little always took a great deal of interest in politics, being a staunch Democrat, and contributed liberally to the cause of the party. In 1877 he was a member of the lower house of the General Assembly. He also served one term in the city council.
Mr. Little is survived by a widow, a sister, Mrs. E.B. Steele, of Scott's Station; a brother, George T. Little, of Waldesboro, N.C.; four daughters, Miss Lula Little, Miss Daisy Little, Mrs. John H. Hamiter and Mrs. W.B. Cole of Rookingham, N.C., and four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Catherine and Robert Little Cole, and Robertelle Hamiter.
Relatives in North Carolina were notified of his death last night and are expected to arrive in Little Rock tomorrow. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
