John Downs received his early education in schools in North Carolina. In 1916 he married Vesta Kerley and to this union was born one son, Jack. She preceded him in death.

He came to Wyoming in 1919 and homesteaded 640 acres of land which became the nucleus of the present Downs Ranch.

In 1940 he was appointed Postmaster, a post he retained until his retirememt in 1956. In 1946 he married Miss Olga L. Rupe and on Jan. 11 this year they celebrated their 25th anniversary. In 1965 Mr. Downs fell and broke a hip and had been bedfast since that time.

He is survived by his widow, Olga; a son, Jack; two foster-daughters, Mrs. Virginia Neuman McCrite of Kansas City, Missouri and Mrs. Frances Neuman Knowles of Stuttgart, Germany; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. Robert Bingham Downs of the University of Illinois at Urbana; and William Downs, Aurura, Missouri; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Gambill, Ashville, North Carolina; and Mrs. Ann Reid, St. Petersburg, Florida. His parents and a sister, Mary Downs Story, preceded him in death.
