Son of Green Beckham and Martha Proctor. He was married in 1839 to Nancy Downing. Their children are: (1) John Jack Beckham born 1843 in Wayne Co, TN and died 1862 in Izard Co, AR; (2) Roddy B Beckham born Jul 1845 in Wayne Co, TN and died 1903 in Mountain View, Stone Co, AR. He was married in 1867 to Josephine C Arnold; (3) Amanda Beckham born 1846 in Wayne Co, TN; (4) Becky Susanna Beckham born 1848 in Wayne Co, TN; (5) Columbus W Beckham born 1854 in Wayne Co, TN. He married Teresa Jane Lowrance; and (6) Martha A Beckham born 1858 in AR. She was married 9 Dec 1885 in Stone Co, AR to James C Robertson.

Hartwell and Nancy planted and harvested, but there was very little dirt on those old limestone rocks to grow corn and wheat much less to make a money crop of anything to sell. Hartwell got a job hauling freight on his wagon from Batesville to Syllamore. The wagon roads were little more than wagon rutts, and the steep hills at the foot of the Ozarks was treacherous, but at least there was some money for the family from hauling freight. Hartwell and Nancy lived near a family by the name of Franklin. Bill Franklin had also hauled freight and thought Hartwell was horning in on his freight business. There had been an ongoing dispute, but both men kept on hauling.

This happened at Harris Bottom on the White River in Arkansas.

Hartwell loved liquor, and often after pay day he stopped by a little saloon with only a front door and no window near Syllamore to drink whiskey. When Hart got all liquroed up he was a hellion, very argumentive, and would fight like a mountain cougar. (It was said by all), Hart couldn't hold his liquor well." A cuss fight between Hart and Old Ben Franklin broke out. Hart was pretty drunk and got sick to his stomach and had to go outside. He was behind a little bush vomiting up his liquor when Old Ben Franklin came outside and from behind hit him up by the side of the head with a big limestone rock. From this blow on the head Hartwell died.
