Luther was born in North Carolina. It's told that his parents died and that he and his brother, Riggin Shivers, went with Valentine Vann and his family to Madison County, Tennessee.

Luther Shivers died during the Civil War on a trip back to Jackson, Tenn. from Crockett, Texas, with yellow fever. They say his horse and saddle were sold to bury him.

He and his family came to Texas 1859-1860 and stopped at the Red River for Saphronia to have a baby (which one we don't know) and stayed there six weeks.

They settled west of Crockett on Porter Springs Road. Later they moved to Augusta, Texas. The log house was torn down within (close to) Cousin Ora's present home.
