U.S. Congressman. He was engaged in agricultural pursuits and later employed as a clerk in a country store, Studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1882 and commenced to practice in La Grange, Texas. He was prosecuting attorney of Gonzales County, (1886-89), when he resigned elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving (1901-17). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection back into Congress and into the U.S. Senate, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 58.
