Whitmire – Mrs. Mary C. Watkins, 83, widow of F. A. Watkins, died at the home on Lowery St., early Thursday afternoon following several years of declining health and an illness of one week.
Mrs. Watkins was a native of Orangeburg County, a daughter of Leonard and Janie Chavis. Since 1929, she had made her home in Whitmire and was a member of the Baptist Church.
Surviving are 7 daughters, Mrs. Mamie Kitchings of Aiken, Mrs. Otto Woddard of Vaucluse, Mrs. Willie Carver of Batesburg and Mrs. C. R. Smith, Mrs. Etha Keel, Mrs. Lila Sherrets and Mrs. Thelma Watkins, all of Whitmire; 5 sons, S. W. Watkins of Aiken, D. E. Watkins of Augusta, Ga., Sgt. Tennyson Watkins of the U.S. Army, stationed in Anneville, Pa., and Marion and Eugene Watkins, both of Whitmire; 1 brother, Jessie Chavis of North; 31 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Whitmire by the Rev. J. R. McKittrick and the Rev. Charles E. Hood. Burial will be in Bethcar Baptist Church Cemetery near Wagner.
The body is at the home. Abrams Funeral Home is in charge.
