Louis migrated from The Netherlands in about 1860 by going AWOL from the Royal Dutch Navy. By tradition, it is said that Louis' parents lived on border towns in The Netherlands and Belgium. His mother in The Netherlands and his father in Belgium when they met.

While in the Dutch navy and his ship was docked in the port of New Orleans, LA he jumped ship. He took a ferry steamer up the Mississippi and settled in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

He joined the US Army and fought against the CSA during the Civil War, which his wife Mary received a monthly disability check until her death.

He was the owner of the Hendriks Jewelry Store from the 1880s to his death at 115 Broadway Street in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. It is said his father was also a jeweler. The brick building still stands today, one block from the Mississippi River. The building is on the historic registry.

The Hendriks family attended the "old" St. Vincent Catholic Parish on Main Street in Cape Girardeau. Louis and Mary had 8 children in which they lived from about age 2 (Charles AKA Charlie) to 79 (John AKA Jack).

Two of his five sons changed the spelling of their last names by adding the letter "C."
