JAMES SHAW.

On section 18, range 19, town 12, lives this prominent and successful representative of the agricultural interests of Lyon county, Kansas. He is one of the very earliest settlers of the county, having come to this part of the state in 1857, the little shanty which he erected upon his claim with the limited dimensions of twelve by twelve feet looking exceedingly lonesome in its environment of long prairie grass and not a shrub or tree nearer than the Cottonwood river. The cottonwood trees have now grown to be immense spreading trees and are a reminder to that gentleman of the swift passage of time. Mr. Shaw was born in Pennsylvania, Bedford county, in 1827, March 26. His father was James Shaw, a native of Ireland, emigrating to America in early life. He was a son of William Shaw, also born in Ireland. The Shaws have always been devoted to agricultural pursuits. Mr. Shaw grew up on his father's farm, located in a new country, which necessitated the clearing of the farm of heavy timber. His life was passed amid the romantic hills of Pennsylvania, where game was abundant and where many times he was engaged in encounters with the fierce wild animals of that region, bears and panthers being numerous at that time. Our subject's mother's maiden name was Katherine Kelly, who was the mother of eight sons and four daughters, our subject having been the fifth child. There are now living of this family four sons and two daughters, one sister in Iowa, while the boys all live in Pennsylvania. The marriage of Mr. Shaw occurred in the summer of 1857, August 16, to Louisa Hammond, who was an adopted child by the name of Rugg, but married under the name of Hammond. This lady was born in Bridgewater, Vermont, December 12, 1834. She was the daughter of Nelson Rugg and Lauretta (White) Rugg. The mother died in 1837, in the prime of life, leaving four children. The father died in the army. To the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Shaw were born Albert C., Emporia; Myrtie A., Mrs. Millard Wilhite; Everett G., deceased August, 1892; Walter C., Oklahoma territory; Katy R., Mrs. William Moffatt, Oklahoma territory; Alice, a maiden living at home; Irvin N., also living at home; Abbey L., Mrs. William Robinson, St. Louis, Missouri. The home farm of Mr. Shaw is one of the best in Lyon county, he having during the years of his residence taken great pride in adding improvements to it; it now consists of two hundred acres, which he rents to tenants, he having reached the age and having accumulated enough of a competence to spend the rest of his life without engaging in rugged farm labor. When he came here he, alone, dug the first well in the neighborhood and also built the first house. In political belief Mr. Shaw favors the reform policies set forth by the Populist platform, he having been in early manhood a Whig and later giving his support to the Republican principles until 1890. In the public life of his immediate section he has been a considerable factor, having served a number of terms as school director. He and his family are earnest and consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mrs. Shaw has proved to her husband a most faithful companion, and a splendid helpmate on life's journey, her sound advice and assistance having been important factors in his prosperity. They richly deserve the rest they have earned, and the esteem in which they are held by their large circle of acquaintances merits their mention in this volume.

Funeral of Jas. Shaw.

The funeral of Uncle Jas. Shaw who died yesterday morning at 11 o'clock will be held Sunday at 11 o'clock at the Fowler chapel. Mr. Shaw was 76 years old and leaves a wife and a family of seven sons and daughters. They are: Mrs. Robinson, of Kansas City, Mrs. Millard Wilhite, of Emporia, Walter Shaw, of Lawton, Okla., Mrs. Moffett, of Lamont, Okla., Bert, Alice and Irvin, of Emporia. Mr. Shaw has been dangerously sick for some time and about three weeks ago all of his children came home to be present as it was feared he would die then, but he recovered so much that they returned to their homes and his death yesterday was sudden and unexpected. Mrs. Wilhite returned to Lamont with her sister Mrs. Moffett. Lamont is fifty miles from a rail road and it will take some time to get word to her. For that reason the funeral was put off until Sunday as it was Mr. Shaw's wish that all of his children should be present at his funeral. Mr. Shaw came here in the early days and was one of the best known farmers in Lyon county. He was born 76 years ago in Pennsylvania. He came to Kansas in 1856 and was married a year later to Miss Louisa Hammond at Des Moines, Ia. He had been a church member ever since boyhood. He had a large circle of friends to whom the news of his death brings sorrow.
