Estherville – Melvin J. [Joseph] Gangestad, 75, Estherville, died at his home Monday [June 12, 1978] afternoon.

Services for Mr. Gangestad will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Estherville Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stan Eyberg officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery, where military graveside services will be held.

Friends may call at the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, until noon Thursday, when the body will be taken to the church.

Mr. Gangestad was born Nov. 12, 1902, at Halfa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel [Jens Severin] Gangestad. He received his education in Halfa schools, where he was graduated from high school. He was married to Ida Mae Sarchett at Estherville in 1928.

The couple lived in Maple Hill, where he was employed as a school custodian and later ran Mel's and Ida's Café in Estherville for seven years. The couple later lived in Bancroft, where he farmed for a few years and was later employed by the state. He was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church and American Legion.

Mr. Gangestad is survived by his wife, Ida, Estherville; two sons, Marvyn Gangestad, Bancroft, and Merlvin Gangestad, Oxon Hill, Md.; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Harriett Edwards, Ceylon, Minn., Mrs. Sadie Hansen, Ringsted, and Jeneva Prull, East Chain, Minn.; and one brother, Clifford Gangestad, Armstrong.
