William Bender
William H. Bender, 76, of 302 East Jefferson Street died Monday evening at Mercy Hospital after a long illness. He was a Former Iowa City chief and county Sheriff.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the George L. Gay Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lowell Koch officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 7 p. m ., today.
Mr. Bender was born March 6, 1892, in Chickasaw County, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bender. He married Francis Fleming on Jan. 28, 1925.
Mr. Bender served in the Army in France during World War I, and returned to live in Solon where he organized the American Legion Post. During World War II, he was a Captain in the National Guard in Burlington. In 1923 he moved to Iowa City, where he served as Johnson County sheriff for two terms, later as chief of police and more recently as city assessor until his retirement in 1960.
Mr. Bender was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church and of the Leroy Chopek Post of the American Legion and World War I Veterans.
He is survived by his widow; three half-brothers, Levi Bender, Lake of the Ozarks, Kan., Elmer Bender, Dallas, Tex., and Leo Bender, Waterloo and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Kammeyer, Waterloo. He was preceded in death by three brothers.
