DIED--In this city, on the 25th of April, Leilla Augusta, wife of J. E. Gates, aged 32 years.

Sunday evening she was taken suddenly worse and her physicians prounounced her case alarming.

Tuesday evening, as the sun sank behind the mountains, her freed spirit forsook its clay tenement, and went home to dwell in the mansion prepared for her, home to the city of the Great King.

In sadness and sorrow we pay our feeble tribute to a most loving wife, most devoted mother, and most earnest Christian...If one star differs from another star in glory, Leilla must shine today one of the most gloriouos luminaries in Heaven's galaxy.

...funeral took place Thursday...Mrs. Gates, for many years, had been the organist at the Presbyterian church...The church was crowded to its utmost capacity and yet it would not hold a half of the loving friends of the deceased, and a vast concourse followed the remains to the city of the dead.

"J.E. Gates" in the interment record is most likely James E. Gates. He was a printer and "co-founder" with James H. Hayford of the Laramie Sentinel Newspaper. Per the Hayford obituary, the two met in Cheyenne and established in Laramie in May, 1868.

In 1882 she was pregnant with her fourth child, a son, when she went into labor prematurely. The infant died and she became ill with erysipelas, a strep infection causing fever and swelling of the tissues. Her mother came to care for her, and she rallied for a while. Then she took a turn for the worse and died on April 25. She and the infant are buried in Laramie’s Greenhill Cemetery near the northeast corner of the caretakers building. - Info courtesy of this contributor, December 2020.
