Cress owned and operated a tug boat named Producton and two barges. He hauled wood pulp to West Point, Virginia. During World War I he delivered supplies to the fleet anochored in the Chesapeake Bay from the James River. He also hauled supplies and ferried men when they were building the James River Bridge on his tug boat for 50 cents a trip and leased the barges to the contractors building the bridge, they stored their equipment on them.

It was during one of his trips from Hobbs to Norfolk that he met his future wife, Daisy. He was taking her family over to Norfolk when they moved it took five hours and during that time he invited her up into the Bridge to see him work. They formed a relationship during that trip and were married three years later.

They had one daughter, Bernice.
