Jacob enlisted in 1861 in Company C, 78th PA Regiment. He was killed at the Battle of McLemores Cove, Ga. on September 11, 1863, and buried at Andersonville, Sumter Co., GA. His brothers, Henry and Frederick also served in the Union army. Frederick was in Company C, 78th PA Regiment with Jacob. After Jacob's death he was reassigned to the Veteran Reserve Corps on Oct. 1, 1863.
Names are listed in 78th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers Company C muster roll, although misspelled "Wiant" instead of "Wyant"
