Joel was a soldier in the War of 1812, and begun life for himself by farming upon rented land, when he continued, until 1834, when he came to Rush County and purchased 160 acres of land for $600, and in the spring of 1835, brought his family to the new country and home; coming down the Ohio River by flat-boat and thence by wagon across the country to Nobel Township. They reared a family of nine children. Joel and Catherine were both members of the Presbyterian Church.
