Memorial service for Lowell J. "Tex" Barkley, Jr. will be held on July 11, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Matador. "Tex" was born in Matador on April 27, 1924 to L.J. Barkley, Sr. and Lillie Patton Barkley.
He grew up in Matador and attended Texas Tech and Texas A&M. He served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1945 before embarking on a career that took him all over the United States and around the world. In the 1960s, he spent several years with the Corps of Engineers at then Cape Canaveral (later Cape Kennedy), where he was very instrumental in the development and redesigning of several aspects in the construction of the Vertical Assembly Building, facilitating a successful upstart of the US space program.
He returned to Matador in 1984. During the first years of his "retirement," he still did several contract jobs, the last one in 1989 on the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. He passed away on June 18, 2010 in Lubbock.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, John Fielding Barkley, Matthew Leander Barkley and Myrna Baumgardner.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Barkley; four daughters; one son; two nephews; several cousins with their respective families; and many friends.
