Phares Bennett was the son of Moses Oslin Bennett and Esther Carpenter Bennett. He was on the overland trip with his brothers Prosper, Leonard and Josiah when he was killed.

"A Mr. Bennet, from Wisconsin, died recently at the Mormon Station in Carson Valley, from the effects of an accidental shot which he received on the Big Meadows. The deceased has a brother somewhere in California. We learn the above from J. Neely Johnson, Esq."

There is a plaque at the Sacramento City Cemetery where Prosper is buried, that names the Bennett brothers.
