He worked to organize the primary and secondary school systems, advocating free but obligatory primary education. He was against secular schools and this stance aggravated both political sides, forcing his resignation six months into his term. In 1871, we was elected deputy for the Seint-et-Oise department. He aided in the compilation of the Constitutional Laws of 1875. That December he was named senator for life. He would die three months after the election of his elder son, Marie Francois to the presidency of the republic in 1887.
