Born September 21, 1928 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late John Osborne and Rosalee Barbour Osborne. She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin Byrd Adkins; two sons, Calvin Glenn Adkins, and John Coleman Adkins; four brothers, Enoch Osborne, Levi Osborne, J.W. Osborne, and Thomas Osborne; and five sisters, Emily Adkins, Valeria Shelton, Frances Bowen, Ella Osborne, and Marjorie Haskins. Mrs. Adkins was a member of Oak Ridge Christian Church, and enjoyed gardening, flowers, and quilting. She also enjoyed bingo, blue grass music, and puzzles. Mrs. Adkins was a farmer, a home maker, and worked at Bassett-Walker in Martinsville.
She is survived by four daughters, Virgie Rowland and her husband, Donnie of Gretna, Martha Osborne and her husband, Roger of Chatham, Janice Hines and her husband, Lawrence of Chatham, and Shelby Easley and her husband James of Chatham; one brother, Randolph Osborne of Altavista; two sisters, Sue Hedrick of Chatham, and Hilda Pruitt of Danville; a special friend, Dorothy Hedrick and family of Chatham; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Oak Ridge Christian Church by Rev. Curtis English. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Lawrence Hines, 6137 Anderson Mill Road, Chatham.
