The son of Frederick & Sarah (Barclay) Miller, in 1860 he was a shoemaker presumably living in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not in the 1860 census. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg June 15, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 10 as a private with Co. K, 12th Pennsylvania Reserves (41st Pennsylvania Infantry), transferred to Co. A July 20, 1862, and deserted June 1, 1863. He then enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland, July 8, 1863, mustered into federal service at Annapolis, Maryland, August 18 as a corporal with six-month Co. D, 2nd Maryland Cavalry, promoted to sergeant August 29, and discharged October 31, 1861, to re-enlist. He did so in Annapolis on November 3, 1864, and mustered there November 9 as a private with Co. K, 3rd Maryland Cavalry. He was promoted to sergeant January 9, 1864, reduced to ranks July 5, and re-promoted to sergeant December 1, 1864. He discharged June 16, 1865, to enlist with the regular army, which he did June 17, 1865, serving with Co. I, 1st U.S. Cavalry.

Cause of death was listed as "apoplexy."
