Joye Oates O'Donnel died on the 29th of September 2011. Mrs. O'Donnel was a fourth generation native Houstonian. Her birthday was on the 1st of January, and she was recognized in the local newspapers as being the first baby born at Baptist Hospital in 1928. She grew up on the family homestead in Oates Prairie, then later moved to Riverside Terrace on Calumet Street. Joye attended Oates elementary school, Deady Jr. High, and San Jacinto High School. She studied journalism at the University of Arkansas and Univ. of Houston. On her parents' 20th wedding anniversary, she married James R. O'Donnel, an Air Corps Officer from Pennsylvania. The couple bought a new home in Bellaire after the birth of their first child. In the late 1950's Joye began her career as an executive secretary, being employed for many years by Texas Instruments, Inc. After leaving T.I., she worked as a commercial property manager. In retirement, she and Jim enjoyed traveling and playing bridge. Joye loved to cook and share recipes with friends. In 2001, she and her daughter, Patricia, attended a French cooking school in the Loire Valley. Mrs. O'Donnel was a member of Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, Braeburn Country Club Ladies Assoc., and Memorial Women's Club. Recently, Joye and Jim moved to the Buckingham, at 8580 Woodway in Houston.
Joye is predeceased by her parents, Nell and Jesse Oates, and her sister, Jessie Jane Barziza. She is survived by her husband, Jim; daughters Peggy McGinty and husband, Milton, and Patricia Bacot and husband, David; sons Mike O'Donnel and wife, Glori; and Jim O'Donnel Jr.; sister, Betty Latham and husband, Raymond; and brother (nephew), James M. Oates and wife, Debbie. Her grandchildren include: Danny McGinty, Joanne, Jeffrey, Taylor, Ann, and Phillip Bacot, Allison Livingston, Lauren and Blake O'Donnel, and Ashley O'Donnel. She also leaves nine great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Dot Norton, brother-in-law Dick O'Donnel, and dear friend Alice Coughlin. Father Bruce Noble provided spiritual counsel during Mrs. O'Donnel's hospitalization.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until half-past seven o'clock in the evening on Sunday, the 2nd of October, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where a recitation of the Holy Rosary is to commence at half-past seven o'clock.
A Mass of Christian Burial is to be offered at half-past ten o'clock in the morning on Monday, the 3rd of October, at Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Church, 7809 Shadyvilla Lane in Houston, where the Rev. James Ramsey, Pastor, and the Rev. James Talmadge Moore are to concelebrate.
Honored to serve as casket bearers during Monday's services are Danny McGinty, Jeffrey Bacot, Taylor Bacot, Phillip Bacot, Blake O'Donnel, Col. David E. Bacot, and Brett Livingston.
Immediately following the mass, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent St. Jude Hall.
At the conclusion of the reception, an escorted cortege is to depart for Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, where all may gather with the family for the Rite of Committal.
For those desiring, and in lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in memory of Mrs. O'Donnel may be directed to the charity of one's choice.
