Monument Honors Dr. L. Y. Pittard
When a football fan enters Rose Bowl Field (Monticello, GA) on the home side, the first thing he sees is the monument which reads, "In memory of L. Y. Pittard, M.D., 1891-1947, who by his unselfish service, his keen interest in high standards of education, his whole hearted support on the athletic field, endeared himself to the people of Jasper County."

That monument was erected at Rose Bowl Field in memory of Dr. Linton Yancey Pittard, a Jasper County physician who was dedicated to the athletic program at Monticello High School and to the Monticello Hurricanes.

Dr. Pittard was a native of WInterville, GA, and a graduate of the University of GA. He attended medical school at the Washington University in St. Louis.

A great lover of sports, Dr. Pittard began practicing medicine in Jasper County in1914 and quickly became a favorite of many Monticello natives. Not only was he a caring and concerned practitioner, but he was also a true and dedicated Hurricane fan. In the years of his medical practice in Jasper County, Dr. Pittard performed the physical examinations of the Hurrican athletes and was one of the prime movers in obtaining the beautiful athletic field for the school.

In "Jasper Reflections," a column in The Monticello News, author John Harvey fondly remembered Dr. Pittard as one who "attended all the games so that there would be a doctor in attendance." Mr. Harvey also noted that Dr. Pittard's wife, Annie Lou, was a talented lady who worked with the school and many civic organizations as well.

On Feb. 14, 1947, a tragedy happened in Jasper County when a fire took the lives of both Dr. and Mrs. Pittard. The obituary in the local paper read, "He was a great lover of sports and contributed liberally of his time and money towards the physical development of the youth in this community."

Later in that same year, a group of former Hurricane athletes began a fund to erect a memorial to Dr. Pittard at Rose Bowl Field. The response was such that residents from all over the county were invited to participate, according to Mr. Harvey.

Another article in the local paper described Dr. Pittard stating, "His contributions to the promotion of clean, wholesome sportsmanship, not only among the players, but among the spectators as well, long will be rememberd by lovers of sports in this vicinity."

That monument was placed at Rose Bowl Field and remains here today for all football fans to see and remember the man who gave so much of his time and support to the Monticello Hurricanes - Dr. Linton Yancey Pittard.
