By 1900, he had married and started a family. They appear in the 1900 Federal Census in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. The househokd included: James F. McCarthy, born October 1869, age 30, born in Arkansas to a father from Pennsylvania and a mother from Arkansas; Annie, age 28, born February 1871 in Wisconsin, married seven years, two children; Irene, age 5, born in Arkansas, October 1894; and John, age 2, born August 1897 in Wisconsin.

In the 1920 Federal Census, the family was in Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida. Daughter Irene had married Herbert B. Carter and had a daughter Regina, age 3. Son John was no longer in the household.
