Peter A. Messer, 85, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2005, at Deaconess Billings Clinic. He was born July 29, 1919, in Great Falls, the son of Andrew A. and Magdalene (Schwan) Messer. He began school in Bridger and later attended Golden, Tucker and Belfry schools. The family moved to Billings in 1939.

Pete spent a year in the CCC in Glacier Park. In December 1941, Pete received a draft notice and enlisted in the Marine Corps. After basic training, he served in Guadalcanal and later served on Tulagi Island. He returned to Camp Lejeune, N.C., where he served until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was employed with the Montana State Highway Department from 1947 to 1976. He married Veronica Iszler, July 3, 1948; they spent 55 years together.

Pete enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, dancing, gardening and entertaining friends. He enjoyed his large selection of stereo music — Country Western, old-time Waltzes, Polka, and playing the accordion.

Pete was a member of the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, American Legion and was a life member of VFW, charter member of Big Sky Federal Credit Union and an active member of St. Patrick's Church.

Pete was preceded in death by his wife Veronica; his parents; sisters and brothers, Mary Eva, Elizabeth Kraft, Delores, Nick Eugene and Albert. He is survived by his brother, John (Cecelia) Messer; a dear friend, Sharon Philips; and loved by many nieces and nephews.

Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be noon, Friday, June 17, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. Committal will be in Mountview Cemetery. Luncheon will follow at the Moose Lodge. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Building Fund.
