On September 27, 2011 at his home in Alexandria, VA. A native of Alexandria, Owen retired as Captain after more than 25 years with the Alexandria Fire and Rescue Squad where he was known by the nicknames "Reds" for his red hair or "Mother" for the meals he prepared and shared with his fellow firefighters. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific; was a former President of the Alexandria Retired Police, Fire, and Sheriff Association; and was loyal and committed to serving the City of Alexandria. Reds enjoyed yard sales and hunting for treasures; gardening, fishing, and spending time at his beach house in North Carolina with his family; was a local sports fan; and a great friend and neighbor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Cornwell in 2010. He is survived by his loving children, Stephen L. Cornwell, M.D. (Luisa), Cheryl Bull, Tracey Carothers (John), and Jim Cornwell (Lesley); grandchildren, Laura, Elizabeth, Meredith, Christian, Devyn, and Jamie; and sister, Lorraine Kimball. Friends may call at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA 22302 on Friday, September 30, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. where services will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Ivy Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HEROES, Inc.
