Oldest of 4 children; Mother died when he was young. At age of 21 moved to Canada with an Uncle, and settled in Huron Co., Ontario.

* Married Margaret Watt in 1863, who died in 1876; they had 6 children, if whom Mary Ellen and James died in infancy, and Jennett died at age 21Y. After death of wife, he moved to Dickinson Co in 1887; lived in Manchester and Talmage areas, in 1892, he brought his 2 oldest daughters to DKCO, leaving the 2 youngest ones with good homes in Canada.

He was survived by Mrs. Jane Bowyer of Manchester, Mrs. Annie Botz of Chapman, and Mrs. Richard Armstrong of Ethel, Ontario; 1 half sister and 1 half brother in Scotland.
