Hiram Hugh Harrison Still was a Veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War. He enlisted on March 22, 1862 in Decatur County, Iowa in Co. G, 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry. This unit became Co. K, 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He was mustered out on April 3, 1865. Hiram's brother, Jesse Still, was also a Private in the same regiment as was Jesse's father-in-law, Samuel McDowell.

Hiram was the son of Meredith Still and Elizabeth Martha (Sanders) Still. He was married twice. First to Jemima Jane (Trembly) Still on December 25, 1853 in Leon, Decatur, Iowa. They had at least seven children including: John William, Joseph Sylvester, Elnora Florence, Catherine Jane "Katie," Jesse Erastus, Charles David and Jemima Elizabeth Still. After his wife Jemima died, Hiram married his second wife, Algeretta "Etta" (Buzan) Stephenson Still (1855-1917) on December 28, 1902.
